<aside> 👋

Most people think getting a conference talk means waiting to be invited. It does not work that way. Conferences run a Call For Proposal (CFP) process, usually 3 to 6 months before the event. You submit your idea. They review. That is the process almost everywhere. The speakers who get selected are not always the most experienced. They are usually the ones who submitted early with a topic that fits the conference theme. That part is fully in your hands. This page has notes, tips, and examples I have collected from going through the CFP process myself. If you are thinking about speaking at a conference, start here. I have included everything I wish I knew earlier.

What a CFP looks like

Usually you only need a good talk title and a description. It starts with an idea and a rough sense of what you want to cover. Do not worry too much at this stage as the outline and agenda can still change after you submit. Just not a complete 180.

Here is a sample CFP so you know what to expect.
